Each one of us has different skills and abilities we will be able to take advantage of in the field of law practice. Whether you are simply an aspiring lawyer, or an adventurous professional who dreams of becoming a judge in the future, it all starts with your law school personal statement.

It is imperative that you highlight and build on your skills when you are applying to a law school. What counts in this whole process is your ability to exhibit your broad analytical skills in a field that is, quite frankly, already filled with talented individuals. What skills do you have that the others don’t? And what specific talent can you exhibit that you can safely say is only exclusive to you?

Analytical skills as a requirement

This is one talent that differentiates the gifted from the merely diligent individual: the ability to analyze situations and create an effective action plan when all the variables in the scenario are unfamiliar to you. Simply put: what you can plan for and do when you have absolutely no idea about the root of the problem. This is where analytical thinking comes into play. Call it common sense, if your prefer. Some individuals call it instinct, while others simply call it the innate desire to challenge the unknown.

You have to construct your personal statement in a way that you will have to answer these questions: How will you react to a situation where everyone says that all hope is already lost? And how will you conduct your practice when it’s quite clear from the discussion that you are thoroughly being outmatched by your opponent in court?

It’s really about closing the gaps in your skill set and highlighting your strengths, instead of your weaknesses.
